Your AI Agent Would Make a Terrible Spy

We could learn a thing or two about AI agents from spy thrillers. Think about it? In every spy movie, the agent never works alone.

Seriously, if you drop a lone agent into hostile territory with no handler, no gadgets, and no clear target, it wouldn’t make much of a thriller. You would have a very short, very sad film.

Agents succeed because there's an operation around them. Someone is setting up the mission, someone’s handing them the gadgets; someone already worked out what the threat is.

Enterprises keep deploying the lone agent. They build a clever model, wire it to almost nothing, hold it accountable to no one. The agent is out there with no handler, gadget, or mission.

Is it any wonder that so few pilots ever complete the mission?

The agent operation

A production-grade AI agent is an operation. Maybe not a spy operation, but it can be. Don’t we all feel like we’re on a mission when trying to figure out the numbers? Get specific about who's in the operation and the whole thing gets clearer.

These are the three roles your agent cannot work without:

  • ai-agent-terrible-spy-icon-1.png

    The handler.

Every operative answers to someone who sets the mission, draws the boundaries, and pulls them back when they go off-script. In AI agent terms, this is governance. Who approved this agent to act? What is it allowed to touch? How do you know what it did, and how do you shut it off? Google's Gemini Enterprise builds this in directly with Agent Identity so every agent is traceable. An agent without a handler is a liability with a login.

    The gadget-master.

We all need a Q in our lives. The one in the lab who hands you the latest cool tool the mission needs, right when you need it. The agent is only as good as the gadgets he’s given. Your AI agent needs gadgets too. It can reason beautifully and still change nothing, because it can't reach the CRM, can't call the pricing system, can't write back to the record. Tools, integrations, and data access — the Agent Development Kit, the connectors, the integrations — are what turn a clever responder into an agent that acts.

    The mission.

You don't send an operative into the field without knowing the target and why it matters. A good one knows the mission cold. And sure, AI makes it easy; you can even ask it to write the mission for you. But a mission worth doing solves a problem. It should read something like this: your mission, should you choose to accept it, is a quarterly sales report that pulls from these three systems, writes back into the CRM, and refreshes the forecast every Monday. That's the kind of job a Gemini Enterprise agent runs end to end.

Just like a spy thriller, Gemini assumes the agent has a team.

Mission accomplished

Gartner predicts more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, citing unclear business value and inadequate controls. With a little mission planning, this doesn’t have to be you.

Here’s an example of an agent SoftServe created for a client that succeeded.

Our healthcare client, a leading dialysis provider, was losing thousands of clinician hours to a manual evaluation process. We rebuilt it as an AI workflow of agents working together on Google Cloud, automating the drafting and giving back 8,000 clinician hours a month and $9.6M a year.

The project succeeded because it had all three agent elements: a clear mission, the right tools, and governance from the start — a handler, a gadget master, and the mission.

We wrote the field manual for this. It covers how to pick the mission, map the tools an agent needs, and build one end to end, walking through an HR agent on Gemini Enterprise.
