Client background
The client builds enterprise-level data capture and automatic identification solutions. Its products give businesses in retail and e-commerce, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and healthcare visibility into their operations. They help customers equip their mobile workforce with tools that capture critical information easily and make data available to the people who keep the business running.
Business сhallenge
The client ran workflows on AWS and wanted to move them to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to reduce costs over the long term.
Specific goals included:
- Migrating from Cloudera and AWS to GCP
- Reviewing and documenting existing workflows
- Building a data lake for data processing and analytics, based on the proof of concept SoftServe delivered

Project description
SoftServe started with a discovery phase. The client first expected to move all AWS workflows to GCP quickly. Discovery showed that this migration required significant work and could not fit the desired timeframe, so the client decided to build a data lake on GCP from scratch instead.
SoftServe then evaluated approaches and recommended the best technology stack for production. The team built a template for migrating all future data from AWS to GCP, which gives the client’s remaining applications a quick win. The team also built the key data lake components and ingested the first data sets, using technologies including Firestore and Apigee.
Value delivered
With the data lake and migration template, the client will cut costs as it moves from AWS to GCP and integrate its applications faster to get key insights. SoftServe continues to advise on automating daily data syncs between AWS and GCP for defined business processes.
