Our Client

In early 2013, Kony, a fast-growing mobile platform-as-a-service (PaaS) company, came to SoftServe with a stalled project. Its internal team had been refactoring the server technology to move it to the cloud, but the work had stopped. At the same time, the on-premises model was too complex for many customers, and trials and platform usage were slowing down.
Business challenge
Kony needed a business intelligence (BI) solution for its new mobile PaaS that was cost effective, fast, and able to scale. SoftServe’s architects compared several architectures and technology stacks. They chose Jaspersoft and AWS for four reasons:
- Cost effectiveness. A multi-tenant design built on web services lowers infrastructure and support costs. JasperReports Server and Amazon Redshift run on a shared database and schema, so all tenants use the same infrastructure.
- Performance and scalability. The target was a response time of under 5 seconds per report. Amazon Redshift’s column-oriented analysis and Jaspersoft’s reporting platform beat that target.
- Self-service reporting. Users can drag and drop business items to build their own metrics and reports, without waiting for a developer.
- Embedded reporting. The team used Jaspersoft’s APIs to connect reports to other systems. The APIs could be customized for the SoftServe-built PaaS platform, which gave the team flexibility during integration.
Project description
SoftServe assigned two architects to the project, one for cloud systems and one for data warehousing. They delivered a proof of concept in 30 days. That gave Kony the confidence to move straight to full implementation.
The team combined AWS and third-party services to build a cloud-based reporting and analytics solution for the new PaaS. Key architecture elements:
- Messaging: Amazon SQS handles high-volume messaging between platform components.
- Task management: Celery and Redis manage distributed tasks and multiprocessing.
- Data warehousing and reporting: Amazon Redshift and the Jaspersoft Reporting Platform.
- Integration: Connections to other SaaS-based systems.
The project had a six-month time-to-market goal, so the team used Jaspersoft’s out-of-the-box features wherever they could. Those features included built-in configuration, repository import and export, and ad-hoc reporting tools. Jaspersoft’s RESTful APIs let the team connect reporting to the other services in the system quickly.
Jaspersoft’s RESTful APIs let us integrate reporting with the other services in the system quickly and easily. We also used several other Jaspersoft features to speed up our work: built-in configuration, repository import/export, and tools for ad-hoc reporting.SoftServe Data Architect

A SoftServe team led by two full-time architects delivered Kony’s next-generation reporting solution within the six-month time-to-market goal.
SoftServe has been a Jaspersoft partner since 2013. They know our offerings well, along with the support options we provide customers. That puts them in a strong position to recommend the right balance of price and value, improve system performance, and fine-tune any Jaspersoft configuration a company uses.Global Channels Director, TIBCO Jaspersoft
