Google Cloud BigQuery Omni - Plays Well with Others
3 min readLet’s face it, no matter how beautiful the analytics dashboard, it holds little value without the right data. Unfortunately, most corporations have disparate information systems that house their critical data that makes comprehensive reporting and dashboards both difficult and expensive.
This problem becomes especially relevant after Gartner found that organizations are increasingly working with multiple cloud providers after a recent survey of public cloud users found 81% of respondents using two or more providers. Gartner also predicted that "By 2021, over 75% of midsize and large organizations will have adopted a multi cloud and/or hybrid IT strategy."
With hybrid cloud and multi cloud deployments quickly becoming the most common type of architecture among enterprises; solutions that can access and analyze data no matter where it resides will become a major component in every companies’ overall data strategy.
INTRODUCING GOOGLE CLOUD’S BIGQUERY OMNI
Google’s newest edition to the Anthos family, BigQuery Omni will enable you to securely access and analyze data across Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure from the comfort of the Big Query dashboard. BigQuery Omni is unique from other comparable analytics solutions because Google has separated the compute and storage functions within the solution. Scalable storage can reside on any public cloud and stateless resilient compute will execute standard SQL queries. Since customers will no longer have to move data between cloud providers this could represent significant cost savings on egress charges, as well as open new analytics opportunities for those companies where these costs were a deterrent to potential reporting requirements.
HOW DOES BIGQUERY OMNI WORK?
BigQuery Omni is part of Google Anthos. If you are not familiar with Anthos, I would suggest that you watch this quick video What is Anthos? from Google. It is a primer to explain the core components of Anthos and the adoption approach.
The following high-level overview is copied from launch information on BigQuery Omni from Google:
“BigQuery Omni runs on Anthos clusters that are fully managed by Google Cloud, allowing you to securely execute queries on other public clouds. Our Anthos hybrid and multi-cloud application platform allowed us to build, deploy, and manage the BigQuery query engine (Dremel) on multiple clouds. When developing BigQuery Omni, we knew that a consistent and unified operations experience was critical to supporting our customers. Here is what the architecture looks like:”
WHAT ARE THE BUSINESS BENEFITS OF BIGQUERY OMNI?
This answer will vary by organization, but at a high level there will be some common themes:
