Understanding Agents and APIs

- Explain the behaviour mismatch: APIs designed for predictable clients (human-driven or deterministic automation) now face probabilistic, autonomous decision-making; agents interpret API contracts probabilistically rather than following them deterministically
- Provide workshop examples: agents hallucinating non-existent endpoints (creating log noise, potentially triggering security scanning), unexpected traffic patterns stressing rate limits designed for human-paced usage, malformed requests that bypass validation built for “sensible” inputs (include anonymised example)
- Explain how agents expose existing API vulnerabilities rapidly across industries (financial services/compliance, retail/scale, energy/safety-critical); established API estates face greater challenges as technical debt becomes visible, but these are recognisable problems with known solutions
Conclusion
- Reinforce that agents expose API governance gaps organisations didn’t know existed; this is happening now as organisations attempt operationalisation
