3 Top Trends to Look for at AWS Reinvent 2022

Like many technology bellwethers, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has a reputation for anticipating trends. Agile businesses whose leaders are paying attention can use this information to help create S-curve leaps in growth and lead their markets. Undoubtedly, the must-attend AWS event of the year and one of the most important events in the tech industry writ large is AWS re:Invent. And AWS re:Invent 2022 promises to shed new light on the big trends driving the future of innovation.

While AWS has not yet revealed the details of which topics re:Invent 2022 will address, I anticipate Adam Selipsky and his leadership team will focus on these three key areas to share their implications on business in 2023 and beyond.

Sustainability as an economic driver

Let's start with a definition of sustainability in this context. Simply put, sustainability is maintaining or supporting processes continuously over time. For both business and policy, sustainability seeks to prevent the depletion of natural or physical resources.

AWS has been a leader in advocating the business and environmental importance of sustainability. And cloud efficiency is a vital part of this, with a focus on techniques for cooling data centers, innovating server designs for maximum energy efficiency, and more.

Coming out of re:Invent 2022, I expect to hear more about AWS' initiatives and investments in areas such as AWS Carbon Lake, which provides valuable insight for driving sustainability goals.

But technology is just one piece of the puzzle. Without the right framework and strategy in place, simply spending more on technology for greater efficiency may result in only that: spending more.

From our experience, it's critical to look at your business holistically: from physical systems—such as office or warehouse facilities—to manufacturing and logistics, even to other technology investments, including compute, architecture, and applications. Taken together, these are what’s essential to achieving a truly sustainable ecosystem.

Cloud migration has moved to cloud optimization

Across all industries, enterprise and ISV companies have quickly prioritized moving to the cloud and modernizing their technology portfolio. Those who have started this process now need to address questions around their cloud or multi-cloud operations.

The many processes around cloud technologies and their operation include management, governance, support, security, billing, business users, etc. The intrinsic complexities of operating from the cloud have caught up with many enterprises, now making optimization their focus and priority.

Development and operational processes will need to change, potentially alongside other business processes as well. Without a focus on optimization, you risk impacting and impeding the main benefits of cloud: agility, scalability, and speed-to-market.

Hyperscale cloud providers like AWS have become the masters of fast innovation, releasing new features at a rapid cadence. However, their ever-growing catalogue of capabilities can make a quick migration to cloud operations difficult. No matter the migration’s speed, it’s not merely about the destination of moving to the cloud. Optimization ensures companies can successfully thrive once they are there.

AI in software development is giving companies an advantage

ISVs and large enterprise companies with significant software portfolios seek to maximize their development capabilities using innovative technology to improve their business goals.

A typical developer must balance their time between both coding and non-coding-related activities. Augmenting a developer's productivity is tricky since only a portion of their overall time is spent writing code. Although computers now also have the ability to write code—and despite the power of the AWS platform—there is still room for coding errors or for developers to feel like they are being made redundant. Both scenarios challenge developer confidence in using AI as part of software development, ultimately making adoption difficult.

Yet, AWS has built a robust AI platform, and companies skilled at using these advanced development tools will have the advantage. It enables developers to focus more on the complex interactions of software components; something AI cannot yet do.

This is why we expect to see AWS introduce more tools to help accelerate AI in software development throughout 2023 and beyond. The sum of these minor AI-powered improvements and the greater use of ML will ultimately result in an impressive overall boost to productivity, speed, and scale.
